Here’s a great little addition to your daily prayers in Latin: the Angele Dei, or Angel of God prayer. This is a really simple prayer to learn; the Latin has a nice rhythm, making it easy to memorise.

Angel of God in Latin – Angele Dei

Angele Dei, qui custos es mei

Me tibi commissum pietate superna

Hac nocte die illumina, custodi, rege et guberna. Amen.

Origin of the Angel of God prayer

St. Anselm of Canterbury, an 11th century Benedictine monk, was long thought to have written the Angel of God prayer. However in recent times, it was discovered that a contemporary of St. Anselm, Roger of Canterbury, included a prayer very much like what we know as the ‘Angel of God’ in his biography of St. Malchus.

Other Prayers to the Angels

While the Angel of God prayer is the most common of prayers to the guardian angels, other prayers to the angels can be found. Some traditional prayers to angels can be found here; some medieval prayers to the angels may be found here and this is said to be the oldest known prayer to a guardian angel.
